About me

Dr Gefion Thuermer
I hold a MSc and PhD in Web Science, and a BA in cultural sciences.
In my research, I have always worked interdisciplinary, with degrees that crossed boundaries between social sciences and informatics, and frequently use integrated qualitative and quantitative methods.
What connects all my academic work is the focus on the people, data and technology, and the desire to enable inclusive engagement wherever people use technology to achieve goals together.
I have worked on many data-focused projects, such as Data Springboard, MediaFutures, and Data Pitch. In my role as a Research Fellow at King’s College London, I am the technical and scientific coordinator of the IMPETUS project, which provides resources, support, and recognition for citizen science initiatives across Europe.
Before turning to academia, I managed international projects and processes in partner programmes for technology companies. I also worked with volunteers in a 30,000-strong political party in Germany, creating new structures and processes as well as building motivated teams.
I enjoy complex projects, picking up challenges, and analysing problems to find innovative solutions. I don’t shy away from diving into new topics or fields, to apply my skills and experience to a greater benefit in new settings.
As a prolific and experienced grant writer I have worked on a variety of funding schemes, including Horizon 2020/Europe and UKRI (UK Research and Innovation).
My success rate on European funding is 20% – with 12m € in total awards to date. I have worked as a freelance research consultant since 2018.
